Sometimes you only have three or four fabrics that you love and want to work with. This is usually not enough fabric variation for most quilt patterns. Such was my dilemma with the Sunflower Sweet fabric line from Wilmington Prints. I love this fabric line (teal and sunflowers!), but needed to design a pattern that would only use 3-4 fabrics. This is exactly how my latest pattern release, Cornerstones, came to be!
For this pattern, I chose a four-patch block that would highlight the darker teal fabrics as "cornerstones" within each block and accented them with a coordinating yellow blender fabric. Then, I added a matching teal sunflower border (thus using 4 fabrics).
Cornerstones is an easy-piecing pattern that goes together quickly. It is very versatile and easily expandable. I created the pattern with four size options: Baby/Crib, Lap/Throw, Twin and Full/Queen. The sample quilt shown above is the throw size.
Cutting is simplified because the 8" block size allows for uniform cutting of 2.5" and 4" squares. Cutting can be made even easier with the use of an Accuquilt fabric cutter, using a couple of the most common cutting dies.
I love the simplicity of this pattern. It is simple, yet elegant! It would look great done in Christmas fabrics, patriotic fabrics or, as a baby quilt using a combination of pastels and bright colors.
Cornerstones is available as a digital (PDF) download here or a printed pattern here.

Until next time, Happy Sewing!
