Island Batik It's All Up to You March Challenge

Ribbons Strip Quilt Pattern
Island Batik its All Up to You Challenge

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik and their industry sponsors.

I am hosting a fabric giveaway to go along with the release of the Ribbons quilt pattern! Be sure to read to the bottom of this post and enter to win!

For March, the Ambassadors were allowed to make whatever we wanted...any size, any theme, any technique! I didn't need to think much about this however, because as soon as I saw that gorgeous Petal Poetry strip pack in my Island Batik Ambassador's box, I knew immediately what I would do with it!

Meet the Ribbons Quilt pattern! I wrote this pattern about a year ago and have been waiting for the "right" strip pack to come along. The striking green and purple florals in the Petal Poetry fabric collection were perfect! I wanted to add a bit more purple to my quilt so I added some strips from the Playful Purple strip pack I also received in my Ambassador's box! For the background I used the color Muslin from the Naturally Neutrals fabric collection. Here are the fabrics I used in this quilt:

Petal Poetry was designed by Jerry Khiev for Bestquilter and is now available in shops. The Playful Purple precuts and yardage and the Naturally Neutrals Muslin are part of the Foundations/Basics collection and are always available.

To begin, I chose the strips I wanted to use:

Then I sorted them into sets:

To prepare the strips, I started by sewing the 90 degree angles for the ribbon ends on each strip.

Then I started joining the strips. I used my favorite go-to needle and thread combo...Aurifil 50 wt thread in Dove Gray (#2600) and a Schmetz Microtex needle, size 12.

I pressed my strips with the fabulous Oliso M3Pro mini-iron. Mine is coral, but they come in several different colors. This iron is so light and easy to maneuver, its a pleasure to use!

When my quilt top was done, I loaded it on my Bernina Longarm and started quilting!

I used my favorite batting, Hobbs Heirloom Premium 80/20 Cotton Blend Batting. This is my go-to batting because it has just the perfect amount of loft, minimal shrinkage and gives the quilt a lovely drape.

Then it was time to bind the quilt! Binding is sort of a double edge sword for me...its my least favorite thing to do in the quilting process, but the binding process means the quilt is almost done! For the binding I used Bubble Hole fabric in Leaf  from the Foundation/Blenders fabric collection from Island Batik by Lumin Fabrics.

Here is a close up of the quilting. I used the Mist pantograph by Sarah Ann Myers from Urban Elementz.

Ribbons is a fun and beginner-friendly strip quilt pattern that only requires a strip pack and some background fabric. It is available as either a digital (PDF) instant download or as a printed pattern.
