I recently had the opportunity to take an Electric Quilt (EQ) Class of my choice in exchange for writing and posting a review of the class. Because I've used EQ for many years (going back to the earliest versions), I opted to take the Master Skills Class.

Master Skills Class

I am pretty much a self-taught quilter, not a class taker. So, I wasn't sure what to expect from the class, or if I would find it helpful for my pattern design business to "dig deeper" into EQ. I'm happy to report that I was pleasantly surprised!

The class is divided into more than 20 segments, each segment being anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes - which is very manageable, even for the busiest person. The class includes a syllabus so you can print it out and follow along if you wish. A resource pack of images you will use in the class is also provided.

The teacher for the EQ Classes at Home is Jenny Novinsky and she is awesome! The class goes along at a good pace and each segment includes a short review, in case you forgot something, or if some time has passed since your last segment. 

So what did I learn? Shortcuts for one thing! Because I taught myself to use the program, I was used to doing things one way, but I learned several different shortcuts that will make designing easier and faster. I also learned how to draw a foundation paper pieced block from an imported image. EQ offers a specialized class for drawing Foundation Paper Pieced Blocks as well. I also found the segment on poly draw very helpful as that's a feature I hadn't used much. There is also a really good segment on panel quilts. Jenny takes you through the process of cropping fabric panels and using the images in your quilt. 

Below is a Lone Star quilt we designed in the class using the hexagonal and stars section from the layout library. I colored the quilt using the Christmas Charm fabric collection from Island Batik.
