Crazy Quilt Butterfly Tracks for Threaded Chaos Blog Hop
Threaded Chaos Blog Hop

The products featured in this post were given to me by Island Batik and their industry sponsors.

Be sure to read to the bottom to find out about the September fabric giveaways!

For September, the Island Batik Ambassadors are participating in the Threaded Chaos Blog Hop with Aurifil! We were to create a Crazy Quilt in a crib size or larger. Aurifil generously supplied us with four spools of thread in whatever colors we chose to match our assigned fabric collection.

My assigned collection is Berry Crush, designed by Jerry Khiev for Curlique Creations. I was thrilled to work with Berry Crush because I LOVE using purple and pink together. This fabric collection is just gorgeous!

It really was a shame to have to cut this gorgeous fabric!

For my Crazy Quilt, I decided to use the 10" Crazy Quilt Die from Accuquilt.

The die cuts 10 pieces. Each piece is labeled with a letter.

I pieced the blocks using my favorite piecing duo (Schmetz Microtex needle size 12 and Aurifil 50 wt. thread in Dove Gray). Here is one of the completed blocks (before I added the decorative stitching):

Once all my blocks were pieced, it was time to add the decorative stitching! Here are the four thread colors I used, along with the size 12 Schmetz Microtex needles. The thread colors from left to right are: 4225 Eggplant, 2435 Peachy Pink, 2540 Medium Lavender and 2440 Peony. These spools are the 50 wt. Aurifil.

This project gave me the perfect reason to test out all the fabulous stitches on my Bernina 770QE that I usually don't use! It was great fun to see what each one looks like. Here is my sample fabric from the testing phase:

I used a different stitch along each seam line in the blocks. Here is a block with the decorative stitching added:

After I finished the decorative stitching on each block, I sewed them together into four rows of four blocks each. Because I didn't want to disturb the decorative stitching, I decided to use the stitch in the ditch method to quilt my Crazy Quilt.

Since I have been exclusively quilting on my Bernina Longarm for many years now, it felt strange to have to prepare a quilt to be quilted on a domestic machine. To make this easier, I opted to use the fusible batting from Hobbs that I received in my Ambassador's box. I was able to easily baste the batting between the layers with my Oliso iron, eliminating the need to pin the layers together.

Stitch in the ditch quilting using the Edge Stitch Foot (#10):

After the quilting was all done I decided to add some applique shapes to add interest. I used the Accuquilt Critters die to cut out some butterfly shapes. I used Steam A Seam 2 (double stick fusible web) along with my Oliso iron to add the butterfly applique shapes to the quilt. For the butterfly bodies, I used Tea Rose from the Precious Pinks Collection by Island Batik. The butterfly centers are cut from the Berry Crush scraps leftover from the blocks.

This was my first Crazy Quilt and it was a fun project! I've named it Butterfly Tracks and it now hangs in my sewing room where I can enjoy it everyday!

Fabric Giveaways!

There will be two giveaways in this month's blog hop. The first will be on September 12th, and the second on the 19th. Unfortunately, the Lumin Fabrics website and blog have not been functioning properly, which means the Threaded Chaos Blog Hop and giveaways will run exclusively on Instagram and Facebook. Followers should enter by leaving comments on Facebook and Instagram, and each week they will randomly select two winners, one from each platform. Be sure to follow Lumin Fabrics on Facebook and Instagram and enter to win!

I love your beautiful quilt and the butterflies are an awesome touch. Great job!

Beautiful quilt, The butterflies are a nice addition. Think are ancestors did those fancy stitches by hand. Modern sewing machines are wonderful.

I love it! The butterflies are such a wonderful touch. I didn’t know Accuquilt had a crazy quilt block die. Kind of wish I knew that ahead of this challenge ~ LOL! Happy sewing!
