My latest PDF pattern, Floral Bouquet is a variation of the traditional picnic bouquet block that makes use of traditional nine patch blocks and sawtooth star corner units to form a "bouquet". The Floral Bouquet pattern includes both a table topper and table runner option, each with different size blocks. For this floral bouquet quilt block tutorial, I will be demonstrating a 13½" finished floral bouquet block.
Fabric Cutting
For 1 block you will need:
Floral Focus Fabric - 4 -3½" squares and 5 - 2" squares
Accent Color Fabric - 16 - 2" squares and 16 - 2¼" squares (for flying geese)
Background Fabric - 8 - 2¼" X 3¾" rectangles (for flying geese) and 28 - 2" squares
Flying Geese Units
Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 2¼" accent square
Lay a 2¼" X 3¾" rectangle right side up. Place a 2¼" accent square, right side down, on one end of the rectangle. Sew along the drawn line. Press the sewn line to set the seam.
Trim ¼" from the sewn line.
Press open.
Place another 2¼" accent square, right side down, on the opposite end of the rectangle. Sew along the drawn line and press to set the seam. Trim ¼" from the sewn line
Press open. Make 8 flying geese units.
Trim each Flying Geese unit to 2" X 3½". My favorite way of trimming flying geese is with the Bloc Loc Flying Geese ruler, shown below. For detailed instructions on trimming flying geese units with a regular ruler, see my Flying Geese Tutorial.
After Trimming
Complete the Corner Blocks
Lay out the completed Flying Geese units with a 3½" square in the center and a 2" background square in the corner as shown below. Sew the two left sections together, then the two right sections. Sew the two sections together to complete the block. Press all seams away from the flying geese units. Make 4.
Nine Patch Blocks
Lay out 4 - 2" accent squares and 5 - 2" background squares as shown below. Sew them together into rows, then sew the rows together to make the block. Press seams toward the accent squares. Make 4.
Lay out 5 - 2" focus fabric squares and 4 - 2" background squares as shown below. Sew them together into rows, then sew the rows together to complete the block. Press seams toward the focus fabric. Make 1.
Complete the Floral Bouquet Block
Lay out the completed corner units and the completed nine patch blocks as shown below. Sew each row together going across first. Press the seams alternatively for each row (the first row presses to the right, the second row to the left, and so on). Then sew the rows together to complete the block.
Your block is complete!
